ASHEVILLE AND ALL SURROUNDING REGIONS NEED HELP. The wreckage and devastation from Hurricane Helene is catastrophic. The good news is that Appalachia has Appalachia’s back through community and boots-on-the-ground helpers; the bad news is that the infrastructure and the federal government does NOT. Our community is steadfast, but our home is unrecognizable.
This is more than just damage, this is life or death for residents of the region. Millions are without power, water, and cell phone service. People are trapped, roads are gone, entire neighborhoods have washed away, and resources are slim. We need help, money, food, and medications, not just thoughts and prayers. Please don’t wait for the headlines to catch up, ACT NOW.
Donating and sharing to direct mutual aid is the answer, and donating wisely. This means putting money and resources directly into the hands of trusted folks who are already helping, as it helps exponentially more than giving to large organizations looking from the outside in. I encourage everyone to seek out and send aid to reputable individuals, local governments, and small charitable organizations who can be trusted to disperse funds and supplies where it’s dire and deeply necessary.
Look for the helpers. -Fred Rogers
